今年も大学教育センターとの協定に基づき、アメリカのインディアナ大学から英語教育の実習生が本学を訪れました。大学教育センターのドリュッシー助教から紹介の記事が届きましたので、センターの学長室ブログメンバーの前田が投稿します。

Introducing the new student teacher from Indiana University, Karen Waldbieser! She arrived in Japan this week, so she is experiencing many things for the first time. She will be practicing teaching as a teaching assistant for 8 weeks in the English classrooms of Associate Professor Lowes and Assistant Professor Driussi.

インディアナ大学からの新しい教育実習生、カレン・ウォルビーザーさんを紹介します！カレンさんは今週日本に着いたばかりなので、初めて経験することがたくさんあります。 カレンさんはローズ准教授とドリュッシー助教担当の英語の授業でティーチング・アシスタントとして8週間教育実習を行う予定です。

From now, we will share some interview questions and answers to help introduce Karen to our university.

ここからは、カレンさんを福山大学の皆さんに紹介するのに役立てるために行ったインタビューでの遣り取りをいくつか紹介します。

Where are you from? Tell us a little about your hometown. 

出身はどちらですか？またその地域について教えてください。

I am from Terre Haute, Indiana. It’s a small town on the west side of Indiana and is very close to the state of Illinois. It was recently in the path of totality for the solar eclipse!
インディアナ州テレホート出身です。 インディアナ州の西側にある小さな町で、イリノイ州に非常に近いです。 それは最近起こった皆既日食の進路上にありました。

What are your hobbies? What do you like to do in your spare time?

趣味は何ですか？また、何をするのが好きですか？

When I am not teaching or doing schoolwork, I spend my spare time reading, going on walks, and listening to music. I used to dance in my free time as well, but since going to university I have not been able to dance as much as I would like.
学校で教えたり勉強したりしていないときは、本を読んだり、散歩したり、音楽を聴いたりして余暇を過ごします。 暇な時間にはダンスもしていたものですが、大学に進学してからは思うようにできなくなりました。

Global Gateway for Teachers has many host countries. Why did you choose Japan?

インディアナ大学のGlobal Gateway for Teachersプログラムには多くの受入国がありますが、なぜ日本を選んだのですか？

When I first considered coming to Japan for Global Gateway for Teachers, it was mostly out of curiosity for the culture and people in Japan. My only knowledge of Japan before this had come from school or anime. Once I began talking to people about going to Japan though, many people shared positive experiences they had in Japan with me which made me excited to go as well.
初めて Global Gateway for Teachersプログラムで 日本に来ることを考えたとき、主に日本の文化と人々への好奇心からでした。 それまでの私の日本に関する知識は学校かアニメから得たものだけでした。 しかし、私が日本に行くことについて周りの人に話し始めると、多くの人が日本での良い経験を私に教えてくれたので、ますます気持ちや期待が膨らみました。

What are your first impressions of Japan and of Fukuyama?

日本と福山の印象はいかがでしょうか？

As soon as I landed in Japan and as I have interacted with several people in Fukuyama, I have been constantly impressed by how welcoming and helpful everyone has been to me. I have had so many questions that people have graciously answered. Of course, I feel very lucky to be able to see the Sakura blossoms as well, they are beautiful!
日本に到着してすぐ、福山の何人かの人々と交流する中で、皆さんが私をどれほど歓迎し、助けてくれたかが分かり、本当に嬉しかったです。 たくさんの質問をしましたが、皆さんが親切に答えてくれました。 もちろん桜も見れて、とてもラッキーです。こんなに綺麗だなんて！

Anything else you’d like to tell us about yourself?

自身について他に何か言いたいことはありますか？

I am so excited to be here, thank you to everyone who has already welcomed me so warmly. If you see me on campus, please come say hi and introduce yourself!
ここに来ることができてとても興奮しています、すでに温かく迎え入れてくださった皆さんに感謝します。 キャンパス内で私を見かけたら、ぜひ「ハーイ」と声を掛けて、自己紹介をお願いします！

学長から一言：カレン・ウォルビーザーさん、福山大学へようこそ！　協定に基づいてインディアナ大学から毎年受け入れている実習生は、もう両手の指では足らない数になりました。ドリュッシー助教もその一人である多くの先輩と同じく、異文化の中で教える経験をたくさん積んで、将来教壇に立つときに役立てて下さい。福山でたくさんの楽しい思い出ができますように！　

A word from the President: Welcome to Fukuyama University, Ms. Karen Walbieser!　The number of interns we accept each year from Indiana University under our agreement is no longer sufficient on the fingers of both hands. I hope that you will gain a lot of experiences teaching in a different culture, and that it will be useful for your future teaching career like many of your predecessors including Assistant Professor Driussi. Please make many happy memories in Fukuyama!
